Twisted double pilot or English leather:

At the time of industrialisation, the English developed "English leather", a fabric made
only made of cotton, to protect the workers at the blast furnaces from flying sparks
(and incidentally to save the much more expensive cowhide aprons).
The workers put the finishing touches to their aprons by rubbing them with damp clay.
